  1. Dear all - I didn't know where to leave a post so here goes

The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) is an independent, non-partisan, international non-governmental organisation, mandated to ensure the practical realisation of human rights in the countries of the Commonwealth. CHRI has offices in London, India and Ghana and works and consults in numerous other countries and jurisdictions. The London Office of CHRI is located in Russell Square, moments away from SOAS, in a building maintained by the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and the University Of London.

As an organisation that works for human rights and freedom of information around the world we are deeply concerned at the magnitude of the human rights violation that appears to have been committed on our own doorstep. The right to peaceably assemble and form trade unions is protected by numerous international conventions to which the UK is a party to. Even if the detention of the individuals in question is lawful, they should have been provided with interpreters and afforded the right to know the charges against them in their own language, as is their right under both national and international law. CHRI London remains deeply concerned about this matter and hopes that it is equitably resolved as soon as possible, with due regard for the basic human rights of the individuals in question.
